Holy Tuesday • Tuesday, April 15

On Tuesday after a long day of teaching, Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the Mount of Olives. There, overlooking the city that would soon reject Him, He offered the Olivet Discourse—a prophetic and deeply personal teaching about the end of the age, the trials to come, and His eventual return in glory.

Jesus spoke of upheaval and suffering—wars, betrayals, false prophets—but also of the need for watchfulness and trust. In the midst of a world unraveling, He urged His followers not to be swept up in fear or distraction, but to remain faithful and rooted in hope.

As the Discourse unfolds, Jesus shares parables that act as spiritual checkpoints: the wise and foolish virgins, the faithful and unfaithful stewards, the sheep and the goats. Each one asks a quiet, searching question—are we awake? Are we trustworthy? The coming of the Son of Man is a promise of hope and aspiration: to live ready, to serve boldly, and to love generously. On this day, we are invited to see that readiness is not just about knowing the signs but embodying love in every small, faithful act.

Reflect
Holy Week in the life of Jesus is filled with building intensity in the midst of a world that is unraveling. There are often times in our life when we feel that things are intense and might be unraveling.
• In those moments, are you able to remain faithful and rooted in hope?
• Are you able to see Jesus in the midst of adversity?
• What would it look like to practice spiritual watchfulness in the everyday rhythms of Austin life—at the coffee shop, on the hike-and-bike trail, in traffic on MoPac?
• We have the gift of hindsight and now know the full story of Jesus. How does knowing the end of the story help prepare you for upheaval and suffering?

A Prayer for Steadfast Hope
Eternal God,
in a world of noise and shadow,
where fear shouts and distraction pulls,
anchor us in Your quiet strength.
Keep our hearts awake,
not to anxiety,
but to Your coming kingdom.
Root us in the hope that does not waver,
and grant us grace to be found faithful—
serving, watching, loving—
until the day we see You face to face.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen.
