Jade Austin, MA LPC-Intern
Jade is a Virginia native that found her home in Texas in the summer of 2016. She graduate from Christopher Newport University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and a double minor in theater and philosophy & religious studies. Jade continued her studies in Memphis, Tennessee at The University of Memphis where she pursued her master’s degree in counseling with a concentration in clinical mental health. She spent the majority of her internship working with boys and girls in the adolescent unit of a behavioral health hospital. Jade found her passion in working with troubled youth and believes that the best way to reach our youth is through warmth, understanding, and empathy. She strives to create an environment that represents a “come as you are” mentality, which allows her clients to be their truest selves. Jade is also trained in Positive Discipline as a parent educator and looks forward to offering Positive Discipline workshops for parents at the Timothy Center. Jade attributes her success to being faithful to the Lord and prays that her life and work with her clients will continue to glorify God.
Conference Topic: 13 Reasons Why: How Should We Respond To This?
There has been a lot of buzz about the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why. The show emphasizes bullying, rape, and suicide in the life of American teenagers, and the consequences of witnessing these horrific events. However, the show fails to address how to get help for these difficult issues. In addition, it also reinforces one of the worst millennial ideals today: life is only as valuable as we think it is. This class will address these sensitive issues and how we, as parents, should handle them.
